Actually for eukaryotic organisms sunlight is the only source of energy....but there r many other organisms which utilize other sources of energy ..
For example the benthic organism of long large oceans which live in the vast inches deep in the ocean don't get even a trace of sunlight these organisms don't even know that some light can be a source of energy so they depend on other things like dead and decaying matter and many organisms also perform chemosynthesis. That means preparing their own food by using of chemicals.

All organisms are able to do glycolysis, which splits a molecule of glucose in half and ... more energy, similar to what happens in the mitochondria of eukaryotes.
