The Rain on the Roof by Coates Kinney is a poem about rain. The memories associated with the rain is told by the poet. He is in memory of the sweet past which he had through the sound of raindrops falling on the roof. Therefore, when the poet thinks of memories from past, the poet here is a grown-up man. Hence poet is not a child. He enjoys the pattern of rain and remembers his mother when he is inside the cottage. Therefore it can be depicted that the poet's mother is not alive.
