is the position paper fine Name of the country: Italy Name of the committee: World Health Assembly Agenda: Reviewing current state-specific policies and deliberating on future actions with respect to Covid-19 OVERVIEW: Nothing threatens the world like the emergence of a deadly virus with pandemic potential. Right from time immemorial, man’s existence has been threatened by one pandemic or the other which claimed the lives of millions of people across the globe. While Experts have continued to warn against an impending pandemic, just this late December 2019, the Hubei Province reported an outbreak of uncommon pneumonia caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus. As the Coronavirus continues its onslaught people alleged that humans rather than mother nature should be blamed for the outbreak and that the virus is a Chinese bioweapon to inflict terror. OUTBREAK IN ITALY : Italy was the first country in Europe to witness a widespread outbreak of the coronavirus. Italy has seen the most COVID-19 deaths out of any country. But the latest figures suggest that the rate of transmission and infection in Italy is on the decline and are promising. CURRENT STATE POLICIES: Italy took immediate, progressive, and serious actions to try to contain the phenomenon. The Italian civil protection department was given full authority to coordinate all the operations, with the support of a scientific and technical committee. Massive information campaigns were launched immediately by the Italian ministry of health and the Italian Red Cross to inform the population on the hygienic guidelines to follow; maximum employment of the entire hospital network and deployment of 350 first assessment medical tents were decided. Italy adopted an emergency decree worth $28 billion to support the economy. The decree was aimed at softening the blow to an economy virtually brought to a halt by draconian measures. The Covid-19 experience is teaching us that health is the most important global public good, universal health is becoming a widespread challenge and there is no alternative to international solidarity and collaboration to tackle global issues. Italy is doing all it takes. Italy is doing its part. But due actions need to be taken across the globe recognizing the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic and the socioeconomic devastation. PROPOSED SOLUTIONS: We recommend a three-step approach: (1) Contain the spread of the virus; (2) swiftly treat identified cases; and (3) cushion the economy from the effects of the pandemic. For this the delegate suggests on creating a World Technical Council on Coronavirus. Its mission would be to control the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the attendant health, social, and economic risks. The Council would support improve collaboration and make high-level, evidence-based recommendations to existing organizations such as WHO, national governments, and global non-profits. It would identify gaps in surveillance, outbreak readiness, biomedical countermeasures, and financing. With this the delegate hopes for a fruitful and constructive conference in order to solve the issue at hand.
