The nucleus of a cell contains chromosomes which are the highly condensed DNA. During the G phase of cell division, these chromosomes decondensed into the chromatin fibres that are involved in the heredity. The opened part of the chromatin fibre actually gets involved in gene transcription and protein synthesis. This is how heredity is carried forward.

But, all the parts of "DNA" are not transcribed. This is why the parts that take part in gene transcription are called the exons and those which don't take part in transcription are called introns.
