There's a little mistake in between ( which is marked in the attachment above )

now here is the correction ,

• (13)² = ( x - 7) ² + x ²

now according to the formula

( a - b)² = a² + b² - 2ab

• 169 = (x² + 49 - 14x) + x²
• 169 = 2x² - 14x + 49
• 2x² - 14x + 49 - 169 = 0
• 2x² - 14x - 120 = 0
• x² - 7x - 60 = 0

applying middle term spilt method ,

• x² - 12x + 5x - 60 = 0
• x² + 5x - 12x - 60 = 0
• x ( x + 5 ) - 12 ( x + 5 ) = 0
• ( x + 5 ) ( x - 12 ) = 0

Thus, we get the values as

x = -5 , 12

since we cannot measure values in negative the value of x is 12 .

then ,

CA = 12cm

BC = 12 - 7 = 5 cm
