Even and odd numbers refer to integers (whole numbers) which behave like real objects. If you have an even number (ending with 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0) of sweets you can share them equally between two people (one for you, one for me) but if you try to divide odd numbers (ending with 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9) into two there is always one left to argue about (try it). So if you add a bag with an even number of green sweets and a bag with an odd number of orange sweets together the green ones can still be divided up equally but the orange ones will still have one left. So the total of both bags will be an odd number, because they can’t be divided equally into two shares.
