The six year old son Jon reassured his dad that he was not afraid to die if he could be together with his family. So these fearless words motivated the author to do his best to save the damaged boat. So Jon, his son's fearless words later on became the title of the story.

“The very title of the story “We're not Afraid to Die.........” suggests that hope sustains life. The narrator, his wife Mary and children Sue and Jonathan set sail from England. They were trying to repeat the incredible feat of Captain James Cook.
