The application of Force may or may not do some work.
e.g; When a system of balanced forces work on an object, the object doesn't suffer any displacement , thus the work done is zero.
So, when ever the displacement is done in the direction of applied force, the work done is positive , and when it is done opposite to the direction of Force, work done is negative. The expression for work done is Work (W) = Force (F) . Displacement (s) ,Or more accurately ,
W = FS Cos x, where x is the angle between Force and displacement. Thus , from here we can also understand that when displacement is perpendicular to force applied, then Cos 90° = 0, which implies that Work done is zero.
