Independence day: Independence day marks the day when India became free from the rule of the British. 15th of August 1947 is the day India won her independence and every year the flag is hoisted and unfurled at the top. This marks the first hoisting of the Indian flag after independence.

Republic day: Republic day is celebrated when the constitution of India came into existence and the country is republic. 26th of January 1950 is the day when India became republic and every year the flag is already hoisted. It only has to be unfurled at the top marking that the country is already independent.
