Tribometer is an instrument that is used to measure frictional force. It still uses the familiar concept of Force = coeff. of Friction × Normal Reaction.

Thus, it still doesn't measure Friction directly. The possibility of having a special device to measure the Firctional Force is negligible. If one is having any idea that there may exist a device that can digitally measure the Friction just by putting it on a surface then i will say that it is not possible because the smoothness or roughness of the surface haven't been correlated directly to the coefficient of friction.
