Indirect speech:

He asked if there was anybody.

or, He asked if anybody was there.

To change Interrogative Sentences into an Indirect Speech, remember some points:

  • If the Reporting Verb is in Past Indefinite Tense, 'is' changes into 'was'.
  • The Reporting Verb and the Reported Speech are joined using 'if'
