It’s possible that there is life on the Moon. The Moon could be a better place for exobiology research than Mars. Seriously.
Not on the surface, of course. But beneath the ground there could be right conditions for terrestrial life to exist.
1.Temperature
Lunar regolith is a good insulator. At a depth of only 0.5 meters the temperature is very stable -21°C, with only 1°C of diurnal variation.According to the same source, it’s -17°C at 2.5 meters and above 0°C at ~50 meters.
Theoretically, there could pockets of liquid water only 50 meters beneath the lunar ground.
2. Water
There is water on the Moon, and a lot of it. Adsorbed water is calculated to exist at concentrations of 10 to 1000 parts per million3. Exchange of material
Earth and Moon are exchanging rocks on a regular basis. Mostly with the aid of meteorites. For example, there are more than 100 known Lunar meteorites (source), many more unknown ones.
There should be fewer meteorites from Earth on the Moon than the other way around, but there are probably many hundreds of them nevertheless.
Events like the Chicxulub impact send tons of material into space, and some of it could eventually reach Moon.
3. Life
Some terrestrial species are able to survive in the vacuum of space for prolonged periods of time. They also able to survive a simulated impact event which could eject them into space. And it’s not just bacteria, but even some complex organisms like this.......
If we want to find life outside of Earth, we should start with the Moon.
