Hi!

Your question is---Is understand a compound noun

Compound nouns  are those which are joined by two or more words to make a completely new word which has a totally different meaning. For Example-- 'sunflower'.

The word 'sunflower' has been taken from the words 'sun' and 'flower' to make a new word which is 'sunflower' meaning-- a kind of flower which always faces the direction of the sun.

Now coming back to your question, 'understand' is a compound noun because the words 'under' (which means below) and 'stand' (which means to be in a vertical state or to put in a vertical state especially a person) have been taken to make the new word 'understand' which can also be used as a verb.

Thank You

(Hope This Helps)
