One unofficial threshold for acountry with a developed economy is a GDP per capita of $12,000. ... Many highly developed countries, including the United States, have high per capita GDPs of $40,000 or above.

The term developed refers to a country where dependents are less as compared to the work force so the GDP( Gross Domestic Product) of the country increases resulting in a developed country. As USA already has a high GDP so we can say it is a developed country.
