It can take 12 hours to fill a swimming pool using two pipes. If the pipe of larger diameter is used for four hours and the pipe of smaller diameter for 9 hours, only half of the pool can be filled. Find using quadratic equation how long would it take for each pipe to fill the pool separately ?

Answer:

larger : 20 hrs & smaller : 30 hrs

Step-by-step explanation:

x hours : larger tap alone can fill

y hours : smaller tap alone can fill

1/x : the part filled in one hour by larger

1/y : the part filled in one hour by smaller

1/x + 1/y : the part filled in by both in an hour

4(1/x) + 91/y) : the part filled in 4hr & 5hr by both

now.....the given things....

1/x + 1/y =1/12...........(1)

4(1/x) + 9(1/y) = 1/2.....(2)

reducing to Linear Equation ....

put 1/x = a & 1/y = b

a + b = 1/12........(3)

4a + 9b = 1/2.. .........(4)

solving (3( & (4). ..we get ....

b = 1/30 & a = 1/20

means...1/x = 1/20 ; x = 20 and ...

1/y = 1/30 ; y = 30

hence larger pipe fills alone in 20 hrs and the smaller in 30 hrs

Note : it's not a quadratic equation question
