actually, pituitary gland is known as master gland. Because, being just an about 1 cm in diameter, it secretes a number of hormones like somatotropic, gonadotropic, melanocytes, oxytossin and vasopressin.

Endocrine glands secrete their secretions I.e. hormones directly into the blood stream. This can also be the reason why the endocrine glands are known as the master glands.

For an example it secrets thyrotrophin to activate thyroid gland and this thyroid gland secrets thyroxine hormone. That means the pituitary gland gives instruction to other glands to release their respective hormones.. So it called the master gland of endocrine system.
