In most countries around the world, taking a gap year before starting higher education is on the increase. Although the reason for this are varied, the overall trend of this is ballooning ar a rapid rate. This essay will analyse advantages and disadvantages of this development.
Taking a year off from studies poses many benefits. Firstly, it provide valuable work experience to the students in their field of interest. For instance, many medical students in the United Kingdom take a gap year to work as a volunteer in care and nursing homes respectively. By working there, they become familiar with the workplace environment of health system. This not only give them an edge through work experience but also equip them for the future life. Secondly, in this period some pupils manage to do jobs to earn some extra money in order to support themselves during academic years. As this shows, certain advantages can be driven by taking some time out of education.
On the other hand, it is argued that taking a year out can lead to the atrophy of student's skills. It may become difficult for them to follow academic timetables. They may show no interest or even decide to quit their studies once they are exposed to the time out of studies for extended period of time. Furthermore, young people who choose to go abroad for this purpose many find it difficult to adjust to the culture and customs of the host country.
