this is so because the pressure of the bag is evenly distributed over a larger area and it doesn't pain

Pressure = Force / Area
P = mg / A

For a bag of weight mg
P ∝ 1/A

Larger the area of strap lesser is the pressure exerted by bag on shoulders. Hence it’s easier to hold the bag with wide straps than the one with thin straps.
