The intermolecular spacing of nitrogen is less than that of iron. Nitrogen is less dense than iron. Hence it is easy to compress nitrogen than iron.

Nitrogen is a gas and between gases intermolecular spaces are most. So we can compress gases most with ease.

Iron is a solid and between solid intermolecular spaces are less than that of gases. So it is harder to compress solid instead of a gas.

Thank you.
