The introduction of modern English education to Indians gave Indians exposure to modern ideas of equality, liberty and fraternity which had earlier fuelled many Nationalist movements in Europe like those in France and Germany. The American War of Independence was also inspired by these modern ideas. Hence, exposure to these ideas and the knowledge of the history and growth of many nations in the world inspired many Indian freedom strugglers like Gandhi, Nehru and others.

Modern education also opened the eyes to the many social evils in Indian society like the plight of the widows, Sati and child marriage. This made many social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidya Sagar, Swami Dayanand Saraswati work towards removing these evils and reforming the society.

Modern education coupled with strong Indian roots gave birth to modern day philosophers like Swami Vivekananda and Aurobindo. It also helped in the education and empowerment of  Indian women like Sarojini Naidu, Aruna Asaf Ali, Vijayalakshmi Pandit and many others.
