Question :- If the equation x² - bx + 1 = 0 has two distinct real roots then which of the following is correct ? . ( we have to find possible values of b .)

Solution :-

Concept used :-

If A•x² + B•x + C = 0 ,is any quadratic equation,

then its discriminant is given by;

D = B² - 4•A•C

• If D = 0 , then the given quadratic equation has real and equal roots.

• If D > 0 , then the given quadratic equation has real and distinct roots.

• If D < 0 , then the given quadratic equation has unreal (imaginary) roots...

Comparing the given equation x² - bx + 1 = 0 with A•x² + B•x + C = 0 we get,

  • A = 1
  • B = (-b)
  • C = 1

Also, given that, given equation has two distinct real roots.

So,

D > 0

→ B² - 4AC > 0

Putting values we get,

→ (-b)² - 4*1*1 > 0

→ b² - 4 > 0

→ b² > 4

Square root both sides, we get,

b > ± 2.

Therefore,

b ∈ { - ∞ , - 2} ∪ { 2, + ∞ } .
