If he stop moving ball suddenly he get injury or the ball Will fall off his hand .This is because according to the Newton's second law of motion the rate of change in the moment is directly proportional to the applied force hence ball is moving means it some momentum but he suddenly stops the ball ( i.e change its momentum in very less time) then time duration is decrease hence force exerted by the ball on his hand increase hence he get injury

hence I whenever we try to caught the ball we drag our hands in the direction of the ball moving to increase the time duration to make ball at rest hence force decrease .

hence force not only depends upon Change in momentum it is how fast momentum is changes
