It takes much time to kill a tree,

Not a simple jab of the knife

Will do it. It has grown

Slowly consuming the earth,

Rising out of it, feeding

Years of sunlight, air, water,

And out of its leprous hide

Sprouting leaves.

Answer: (a) A tree absorbs years of sunlight, air and sunlight.

              (b) A tree feeds on the earths crust consuming nutrients from the earth. The tree absorbs  years of sunlight, air and water . This makes it strong

(c)It is not easy  to kill a deep rooted tree by  simply hacking or chopping in it. He tree has deep roots which give birth  to tiny twigs  and branches  which help the tree attain its old stature. For a tree to be killed the root has to be uprooted  and it has to be scorched and chocked in sun and air. This process takes much time and it requires a lot of effort.

(d) The bark of tree is uneven in texture and colour .  Leprosy  also robs the  skin of the leper of its colour and evenness. Hence the poet has drawn a  metaphorical  comparison between the  discoloured bark of a  tree and the discoloured skin.

(e) gieve patel
