Industrialisation is inevitable for the development of a country. However, it also causes serious environmental pollution. For a country like India, though waste may seem to be a by-product of growth, we cannot afford to lose it as a mere waste. TARA believes that meeting the employment and livelihood needs of the vast majority of India’s rapidly growing population will require the creation of micro-entrepreneurship opportunities on a massive scale.

Waste, currently viewed as a menace, can soon be a resource for micro-enterprise development on a large scale. Such an intervention has a two-fold objective of:

Reduction of pressure induced by waste on the environment.Creation of opportunities for income and employment generation.

There is high potential to set up a waste-to-wealth enterprise in India, since only 26% of the paper waste gets recycled at present.

TARA is a prime player in waste-to-wealth enterprise development, and has rich experience of more than two decades in the recycling domain. Nearly 26 years back, TARA innovated the waste-to-wealth paper recycling technology to promote sustainable lifestyle through use of recycled products, and create new livelihoods and jobs through enterprise development. TARA Papermek technology is the only technology that can recycle wastes of denim and Tetra Pak on a micro or small scale. TARA has commissioned more than 300 recycling enterprises across India. It has partnered with the Department of Science and Technology, Tetra Pak, GIZ, CMPDI etc. on different initiatives. TARA sits at the heart of these paper recycling enterprises value chain, where it provides functions like aggregation of raw materials, dissemination of technology, training and capacity building, business management support and market access.

TARA has also incubated its own paper recycling unit, run by the Sahariya tribal women and other marginalised groups in Bundelkhand region (Central India). The enterprise provides the local community with an alternative source of livelihood, with the aim of disconnecting the dependency of local livelihoods on the natural resources, while ensuring a reliable employment base throughout the year. The enterprise has the capacity to recycle 300 kg of waste to produce 200 kg or 10 reams of 100 gsm paper
