The narrator is referring to the incident when three friends got engaged in opening a tin of a can.All three tried one by one to open it. Firstly Harris tried to open it with knife, then George tried with scissors then finally narrator tried it with the hitcher. But it could not open. Then Harris hold the can, George put a stone on it and the narrator strike on it. It bounces up and may harm George but the straw of his hat saved him. The tin still not got opened so they threw it in the water.
