It was going for very little money. I thought I could restore it. It would be a risk a challenge, but I had to have it.
The speaker of these lines is the narrator.
- In the story, "The Best Christmas Present In The World" written by Michael Morpurgo, the narrator at the beginning of the story is in a second-hand goods shop. He wanted a roll-top desk for a long time but he was unable to afford it as they were quite expensive.
- When he finally saw a roll-top in a junk shop in Bridport the seller of the junk shop informed him that it was made of oak in the early nineteenth century.
- The roll-top desk was poor in shape because it was old. It was not in proper condition, one of its legs was not repaired and it also had imprints of burn on one of its sides.
- Since the roll-top desk was old and in poor condition, the price available for the rolling desk was cheap. The narrator was longing for it so much that he thought that he could renovate it even though it looked impossible. And so he bought it at home.
