2y³ + y² - 2y - 1

= y²(2y+1)-1(2y+1)

= (2y+1)(y²-1)

Either,

2y+1 = 0

=> 2y = -1

=> y = -1/2

Or

y²-1 = 0

=> y² = 1

=> y = 1

Hope it helps...
