Vasco da Gama was an explorer from Portugal who was the first in Europe to reach India by sea. He began his first voyage in 1497 was the first to be able to connect the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean through a single route, and allowed Portugal to create a large colonial empire in Asia.  He is believed to have travelled through this new route to avoid sailing the Mediterranean, which did not allow most Europeans to cross at the time.
