Jai and Veeru are engine drivers of Rajdhani (210m long) and Shatabdi express (280 m long)
respectively. Speed of Rajdhani is 30 m/s and that of shatabdi is 40 m/s. The trains are running on two
parallel tracks but in opposite direction. Jai throws water from his water gun at a speed of 2.5 m/s
aiming at Veeru when they are closest (just crossing each other). However the water could only wet
Basanti sitting at the end of the train. Find the distance between the parallel tracks (assume width of
trains equal to width of tracks)​

Given :-

  • Jai is engine driver of Rajdhani which is 210 m long .
  • Veeru is engine driver of Shatabdi which is 280 m long .
  • Speed of Rajdhani = 30 m/s .
  • Speed of shatabdi = 40 m/s .
  • The trains are running on two parallel tracks but in opposite direction.
  • Jai throws water from his water gun at a speed of 2.5 m/s aiming at Veeru when they are closest .
  • However the water could only wet Basanti sitting at the end of the train(Shatabdi).

To Find :-

  • Find the distance between the parallel tracks . (assume width of trains equal to width of tracks) .

Solution :-

we know that,

  • In opposite direction , usual speed = S1 + S2 .
  • Time = Distance / speed .

so,

→ usual speed of trains = 30 + 40 = 70m/s .

and,

→ Distance to be covered = Sum of length of both trains = 210 + 280 = 490 m.

then,

→ Time taken by trains to cross each other = Distance / usual speed = 490 / 70 = 7 seconds.

now, given that, speed of water is 2.5 m/s and Basanti was sitting at the end of the Shatabdi train .

therefore,

→ Distance between parallel tracks = Distance covered by water in 7 seconds .

→ D = S * T

→ D = 2.5 * 7

→ D = 17.5 m (Ans.)

Hence, the distance between the parallel tracks is 17.5 m .
