SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • James had $ 240 more than his brother, Sam, at first.

  • After their mother gave James $ 30 and Sam $ 50, James had twice as much money as Sam.

TO DETERMINE

The amount of money Sam have at first

EVALUATION

Let the amount of money Sam have at first = $ x

So the amount of money for James at first

= $ ( x + 240 )

Now it is given that their mother gave James $ 30 and Sam $ 50, James had twice as much money as Sam

Therefore the amount of money for Sam

= $ ( x + 50 )

Also the amount of money for James

= $ ( x + 240 + 30 )

= $ ( x + 270 )

So by the given condition

 \sf{2(x + 50) = x + 270}

 \sf{ \implies \: 2x + 100 = x + 270}

 \sf{ \implies \: 2x  -  x  =  270 - 100}

 \sf{ \implies \: x  =  170}

Hence the amount of money Sam have at first = $ 170
