In 1817, There was a Scottish economist and political philosopher Named JAMES MILL. He published a three volume work called "A History Of British India". Where he divided Indian History into three periods- Hindu, Muslim and British. But later It has been argued by many historians that it is not correct to periodise the Indian history on the basis of religion of the rulers.
So, moving away from this classification the historians have usually divided Indian History into "ANCIENT HISTORY", "MEDIEVAL HISTORY" and " MODERN HISTORY".
