In Japan single ladies over the age of 26 at Christmas are referred to as Christmas Cakes or Kurisamu Keki.

It means that the ladies are like Christmas cakes if they are above the age of 26 they will be difficult to dispose of. They are marriageable till the age of 25. Christmas in Japan is quite different from other countries. The winter holiday is not officially recognized. But they do have the traditions like  Christmas trees, Santa Claus and presents.

The answer is Christmas cakes.

In Japan, single women over the age of 26 at Christmas are sometimes cruelly referred to as Christmas cakes or Kurisamu Keki as the cakes are called in Japanese language.

Stores in Japan stock different types of Christmas cakes during the festival season and offer them at huge discounts on December 25 so that all of them get sold out by the 26th. It is this practice that has led to unmarried girls over 26 years of age being referred to as Christmas cakes. They are considered as marriageable till their 25th birthday. After this, they are considered no good by Japanese men like how Christmas cakes are considered to be “useless” after the 25th of December.
