Jaya is on a small boat which is situated at the centre of a circular pond . The radius of pond is 30m . She wants to reach the shore and from that she throws a stone of mass 0.5kg lying on her boat with velocity 50m/s . If mass of Jaya, boat and stone together is 50.5kg , How much time will she take to reach the shore ? Assume there no friction between water and boat.

She will take 1 min to reach the shore

• This problem follows law of conservation of momentum.

• Let M` be the combined mass

m be the mass of the stone

M be the remaining mass

• let v be the velocity of the stone

V be the resultant velocity of boat

V` be the initial velocity

• So M`V` = mv + MV

• But the boat was at rest, so

V` = 0

This means MV = -mv

• According to the question,

50 kg * V = .5 kg* 50m/s

V = 0.5 m/s

• Distance to the shore= radius

= 30 m

• time = distance/ velocity

= 30/.5 s

= 60 seconds

= 1 min
