Glucose --- HNO₃, (AC)₂O -----> X

--- (AC)₂O ---------------> Y

--- H₂/Ni, (AC)₂O -----> Z

we have to calculate required moles of (AC)₂O in X, Y and Z product formation.

solution : when glucose is treated with HNO₃ , saccharic acid forms and then it is treated with (AC)₂O, gives COOH-(CH-OAc)₄-COOH.

here it is clear that 4 moles (Ac)₂O are required.

similarly, treating glucose directly with (Ac)₂O, gives CHO - (CH-OAc)₄ - CH₂OAc , require 5 moles of (Ac)₂O.

glucose + H₂/Ni -> CH₂OH - (CHOH)₄ - CH₂OH + (Ac)₂O -> CH₂OAc - (CH-OAc)₄ - CH₂OAc , require 6 moles of (Ac)₂O.

Therefore required moles of (Ac)₂O in X , Y , Z product formation are 4, 5, 6 respectively.
