Jivan Lal is a mean and greedy person. He wants to extract more Dowry from his daughter in  law, Kamla's family. He is a rude person and insults Parmod when he comes to take his sister, for her first visit to her parent's house after marriage. He expresses his contempt towards Kamla's family by not allowing her to go to her maternal home.

He is boastful and says that his own daughter is being treated very nicely by her in laws because he has given a huge Dowry. He is shattered and realizes his mistake when his daughter's in laws refuse to send her home because the dowry he has given is not enough for them. He allows Parmod to take Kamla to her parent's house.
