The three friends make a plan to go on a either a long sea journey or a long boating expedition in Thames. After a some pondering and discussion they finalize the boating expedition. They make the plan as they feel they are in dire need of change from the monotony of their routine life. Only Montmorency, the author's dog objected to it.
