The story seems to suggest that there was something mysterious about the forest. Anyone who entered the forest at night never returned to the village. The possibility of attack by wild animals cannot be ruled out nor can the possibility of being in real danger in some other city can be negated. The fact remains that one who entered the forest never returned to narrate his experience. Thus, the exact reason for disappearance is unknown.

6. Describe how Johanna‘s fear were slowly put to rest as she journeyed into the depth of the forest?
Ans: Since Johanna had been warned against entering the forest at night she was naturally quite apprehensive and somewhat fearful. Her feet were unsteady initially but as she kept running the cold crisp air seemed to clear her head. She felt unnaturally alert and it seemed that all her senses were working rather well Even after her fall she noticed that the forest was no longer dark and she could now see clearly. Her confidence grew with every step and finally she reached the outskirts of the village.
Q7. Who does Johanna encounter when she comes to the houses at the edge of the forest?
Ans: Once Johanna reached the edge of the forest she could smell the musk of the farm animals. Slowly she started to walk towards the houses. A dog barked followed by another. A woman’s voice could be heard asking the dog to quieten down. This was followed by the sound of the doctor’s voice. Around this time the doctor stepped out and enquired who was there.
Q8. Why was Johanna unable to tell the doctor who she was?
Ans: The barking of the dog caused the doctor to step out with a gun in hand. Johanna stepped forward into the light of the yard. She tried to speak her name but could not recall it. She was there but not a word came out from her. The doctor was staring at a deer—Johanna turned around to see what was behind her. She had no idea that during the course of her journey through the woods she had been transformed into a deer and thus had lost the use of human language.
