Given : John has some apples, and two brothers,

John eats 3 of his apples and splits the remainder equally between himself and each one of his brothers

Jack and Jim both eat half the apples they have been given.

. Together the three brothers have 4 apples left.

To Find : apples John start with

Solution:

Assume that John Started with Apples  = 18x  + 3

John eat = 3

Left = 18x + 3 - 3  = 18x

Splits the remainder equally between himself and each one of his brothers

Hence

Each has = 18x/3  = 6x

Left with John = 6x

Jack and Jim both eat half the apples they have been given.

=> both eat  = 6x/2  = 3x

Left with Jack and Jim =  6x - 3x  = 3x  each

Total Left  = 6x + 3x  + 3x  = 12x

12x  = 4

=> x = 4/12

=> x = 1/3

=> 18x  = 6

=> 18x + 3  = 6 + 3

=> 18x + 3 = 9

Hence  John Started with 9 Apples
