John says the transformation rule (x, y) Right-arrow (x + 4, y + 7) can be used to describe the slide of the pre-image (4, 5) to the image (0, –2). What was his error?

Answer:

John's error is that he applied the transformation rule to the image instead to the pre-image.The pre-image is the point you start with. To check the transformation rule, substitute the values of the coordinates (4, 5). This results to (4, 5) + (4+4, 5+7). Simplify to get (4, 5) → (8, 12). This is the image.

hope it will help you

Error made by John is that he interchanged Pre image and Image coordinates

Given:

John says the transformation rule (x, y) Right-arrow (x + 4, y + 7) can be used to describe the slide of the pre-image (4, 5) to the image (0, –2)

To Find:

Error

Solution:

  • (x  , y)  Pre image
  • (X , Y)  Image
  • Then Translation (x , y) → (x + h  , y + k)  where  X  = x + h  ,  Y  = y + k

(x , y) = (4 , 5)

(X , Y) = (0 , -2)

=> 0 = 4 + h

=> h = - 4

-2 = 5 + k

=> k = -7

Hence (X , Y) = (x - 4 ) , ( y - 7)

Error made by John is that he interchanged Pre image and Image coordinates

4 = 0 + h  => h = 4

5 = - 2 + k => k = 7
