Given: John Travels to North = 250 miles

           backtrack to the south for 105miles

To Find: Total distance (D) and displacement (s) covered by John

Solution:

total distance is the total miles traveled = 250 + 105

                                                                D = 355 miles

Total Displacement = shortest distance covered

John tracked the same path again in the south direction for 105 miles ,

Displacement can be negative but distance is always positive i.e. Displacement is a vector quantity whereas Distance is a scalar quantity.

Hence, Displacement (s) = 250 - 105

                                    s = 145 miles

Therefore, the distance covered by John = 355miles and Displacement = 145 miles.
