(2) is the correct answer.

A physical change is a change where only the physical properties of the substance undergo a change. These are reversible and the substance can be brought back to its previous condition.

  • When Jolene burns the sugar cube with a matchstick, it undergoes a chemical change i.e, its chemical properties are changed. Chemical changes are irreversible.
  • When Jolene crushes the sugar cube and dissolves it into water it undergoes a physical change. The physical properties of the sugar cube change but this change is reversible. If we heat the water we can obtain the sugar back.
  • Heating the sugar cube with acid is again a chemical change, it destroys the chemical properties of the sugar cube. Hence, it can not be reversed.
