Jose is 3 times as old as wally

Jose = 3 x x = 3x

wally = x

5 years from now

Jose = 3x - 5

wally = x - 5

Sum of there ages = 42

As per the given problem,

( 3x - 5 ) + ( x - 5 ) = 42

3x - 5 + x - 5 = 42

4x - 10 = 42

4x = 10 + 42

4x = 52

x = 52 / 4

x = 13

Jose s age = 3x - 5 = 3 x 13 - 5 = 34

wally s age = x - 5 = 13 - 5 = 8
