let the apples that Jenna have be y
therefore Jenna has 9(x-4)+y
9x-36+y=0
9x+y=36
x+y=36/9
x+y=4.. .....(1)
now according to 2nd condition
let Julius apples be x
therefore 4(y+2)-x
4y+8-x=0
4y-x=-8
y-x=-8/4
-2......(2)
By using the method of equating the coefficients.
Adding (1) and (2)
x+y=4
+ -x+y=-2
________
2y=2
y=1
Substituting y in (1)
x+y=4
x+1=4
x=3
therefore x=3 and y=1 is the solution.
Hope it helps
