The school canteen is a place where children gather to have a bite of something different from what is in their regular lunch boxes. In order to improve nutrition amongst the students, the education department has restricted the delivery of junk food inside and outside the state government school premises.
The schools, district education officers have been asked to keep a tab on the same.
Anjali Bhawra, principal secretary, school education said that the objective is to create awareness amongst the students about the ill effects of consuming junk food and provide good quality and safe food in the school canteens.
"There is a need to aware kids about how these junk foods are harmful for their health in the long run. We have also asked the district heath officers to do regular check on the school canteens and outside the school premises", she added.
"There should be no canteen or shop inside the school or outside the school wherein junk food is available. There is a need to aware the kids that lunch box which they bring along with them from their home is sufficient and healthy enough".
The district health officers should also check the food sold outside the canteen contractors inside the school.
The district education officers have also been asked to organize seminars, discussions and other cultural activities about the nourishing diet and healthy food.
"The schools will organize seminar and discussions on diet and their health", she added.
She said that action would be taken against the schools who would not stop the junk food delivery inside the school campus
