“Liberty” is fairly simple - the right to do what you want as long as you obey the law.

“Equality”, though, has many meanings.

For example, in horse racing, almost all races are “handicaps”. That is, horses are assigned different weights to carry in order to make the race closer. In a sense, that is to make the horses “more equal.”

Yet, “equality” should mean that each horse carries the exact same weight - which would also meet the sense of “equality.”

So we have a dilemma - should we seek to ensure the same outcome for each horse in the race? Or should we allow the faster horse to be “unequal”?

Often people seem to equate “equality” with “identicality” - that is that every member of a group or set is now to be regarded as exactly the same as every other member of the group or set. If I said “all T-bone steaks are equal”, I would be laughed at. (I hope).

On the PGA tour, all golfers are not equal. In football, all teams are not equal. In medicine, all doctors are not equal.

So the question begets a question - which use of “equality” would you like to invoke in this world?
