As there are two parents involved in the reproduction, and of those two parents they have total four parents of which they are carrying genes too. So sometimes a child gets a long height even when their parents are short but in their grand parents someone could be long, so a single chromosome can carry variant genes of ancestors and can pass them further in generations.
