Genes are segments of DNA which code for proteins. In the nucleus, DNA can be organised to form chromosomes. In humans there are 46 chromosomes but the estimated number of genes is 19,000 – 20,000. Thus many genes must be present on a single chromosome, otherwise we would have 20,000 chromosomes instead of only 46.

Genes are contained in chromosomes, which are mainly in the cell nucleus. A chromosome contains hundreds to thousands of genes. Every human cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46chromosomes.
