2-hydroxybenzoic acid is an aryl alcohol. 2-methoxybenzoic acid is an alpha tic alcohol. In 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, -OH group is directly attached to the benzene ring. In 2-methoxybenzoic acid, -OH group is attached to the -CH2 group which is attached to the benzene ring. So -OH group is not directly attached to the benzene ring. Benzene ring shows -I effect. So 2-hydroxybenzoic acid is stronger than 2-methoxybenzoic acid.
