The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary boundary which  runs from north pole to south pole along the 180-degree meridian and separates one day from the next. Depending on which direction we travel - west or east it is exactly the same distance away from the Greenwich Meridian.

• The International Date Line is the result of the worldwide use of timekeeping systems that make local noon about the time the sun crosses the central longitude meridian
• A traveler traveling the whole day, carrying a clock that he advanced or set in by one hour, as he went into a new time zone with a calendar that he advanced by one day whenever his clock showed at midnight, would find according to his own experience that the day was different from the day held by people who stayed at the beginning
• The International Date Line provides a standard means of making the needed readjustment: travelers moving eastward across the line set their calendars back one day, and those traveling westward set theirs a day ahead.
• There must be a place with different times, a day that truthfully "starts" somewhere on the world. The 180 degree longitude line is thus situated roughly on the international date line, just a halfway around the world from Greenwich, England (0 degree longitude).
