The Meaning of the Title " Godan".

  • One of the most well-known books written by the legendary author of Nirmala and Kayakalp is Godan by Premchand.
  • Literally translated as "donating a cow," "godan" is the most important funeral ceremony in Hinduism, without which one cannot even consider salvation.
  • The tale depicts the realities of an impoverished peasant's life. It serves as a social record of the economic hardships of Indian peasants and sheds light on the violence that results from the disparity between lower and upper castes.
  • Godan is an Indian ritual. It is believed that in order for a deceased person to find peace, one of their family members must do "Godan." Such notions are prevalent among Indian peasants who adore or aspire to own at least one cow.
  • He depicts the Indian peasantry under British control in this book, as well as the function of the cow in the peasant's household. The main character of this story desperately wanted a cow for his home but didn't have the money to buy one.
  • As a result, he decided to con Bhola, a resident of his neighboring hamlet who had a large number of cows and bullocks at his residence, into giving him a cow. He deceived Bhola by promising to arrange for him to marry a young woman from his in-laws' village.
  • Because Bhola was a widower and wanted to be married again, he was persuaded by his conversations to give him a cow that he had purchased for 80 rupees.
  • As a result, Hori got a cow; however, the cow was poisoned by his brother out of jealousy. Thus, Hori's wish to own a cow remained unfulfilled.
  • Hori's ambition to own a cow persisted right up until the end of his life, but he was unable to achieve it.
  • When he passed away, his wife Dhaniya wanted to perform the ritual and conduct Godan, but she didn't have enough money to purchase a cow. As a result, she chose to give all of her money to the pandit Dattadin in the name of "Godan."
